Loose Wire Bits, Nov 12 2006

Bits and pieces:

  • Andrew Lih reports that since China lifted its block on Chinese Wikipedia new registrations — people signing up to add or modify entries — have shot up from 300-400 to more than 1,200 on Sunday. Says Andrew: “The ZH community has been waiting over a year for this moment.”
  • The Media Gap: BBC Touch compares the BBC website’s top stories to what people are actually reading on the website. Currently, only one BBC top story is in the top 10 of what people are actually reading (and no, that’s not because we’re all reading about EastEnders.) (thanks, Charles)
  • Songbird “is a desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up. Like Winamp, it supports extensions and skins feathers. Like Firefox, it is built from Mozilla, cross-platform and open source.” It’s not really ready yet, but check out the screencast. Songbird looks set to do to MP3 playing software what Firefox did to browsers by merging the offline and the online and making it simple.
  • Fleck is a service (for Firefox, so far) that seems to annotate web pages (which we’ve heard of before) developed by, among others, Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten, who developed the excellent preople.com. Actually I’m not quite sure what Fleck is, or what’s different about it, because none of the links on the website work apart from the blog. Another bit of Web 2.0 hype, or something useful? Initial response is: Sounds too much like Flock for comfort.
