Nokia’s “Care” Centres

By | October 7, 2004

Please note that I don’t work for Nokia, this is not an official Nokia site, and although I’m flattered by all the attention this post gets, posting your problem isn’t going to help you. I’ve invited Nokia several times to offer some text that I can include here to direct users to a real Nokia site, but without success, so I’m doubtful they’re going to be reading anything here. Instead, I suggest those of you in India visit this link for more information about where to get help. Alternatively you can send them an email here.

——

Is it a sign of Nokia’s demise, or just a glimpse of an opportunity missed?

I had to take my 7650 in for mending yesterday: The keypad doesn’t respond well when I press ‘6’, which I do a lot. So rather than swear every time I key in an SMS with the letters M, N and O in, I thought I’d get it fixed. They have quite a few official Nokia Help Centres (I think they’re called Care Centres) around my town so I tried one.

It was not a particularly helpful help centre — there was only one customer in there, and the spare customer helper person disappeared out for her lunch as soon as I came in — but that wasn’t what bothered me. What bothered me was that the conversation with every customer seems to go like this:

— My phone doesn’t work.
— OK, leave it with us and we’ll check it.
— Great, a thousand thank yous (this is a polite country).
— Have you backed up your data?
— Pardon?
— We’ll have to erase your data when we check the phone.
— Er, erase? You mean all my phone numbers, treasured text messages, settings, photos of my grandchild?
— Yes. And those mildly pornographic pictures of your wife you keep in a sub-folder.
— (Gulp.) Don’t you have any way to back up the memory first? This is a phone, not a computer. I’ve never backed it up in my life. How do you back it up?
— No, we don’t do that kind of thing.
— You don’t do that kind of thing? What do you do then? Ruin people’s lives? Push otherwise normal people into madness? You expect to write down all the numbers and key them in again? You expect my grandchild to be happy when I explain to her the photo got deleted by my friendly Nokia Care Centre? (exit to sounds of flying phones, curses, scratched nails on blackboards etc etc)

Ok, that’s not necessarily a real conversation, but I find it too weird that Nokia can’t back up the memory on its own cellphones. Sure, they’ll probably argue liability and all that, but I’ve heard of some very angry customers who didn’t realise that handing over their cellphone to a Nokia Care Center would erase all their data. It must be easy to take a snapshot of the memory and then reload it. I’m not surprised customers don’t back up their cellphone memory. Have you ever tried to use Nokia’s PC backup software? It’s about as easy and helpful to use as a home-labotomy kit.

I can’t help concluding from this that Nokia either doesn’t get it, or is losing it. Maybe their help centres elsewhere are more helpful. But if the company wants to retain market share, and to encourage people to store more on and do more with their phones, they’ve got to help them keep that stuff there.

*haha* Devilishly hilarious, absolutely. Then again customer support officers don’t have it easy either. Half the time they do not have anymore clue about the problem than you do. They say that “the messengers are always the one who get shot,” and I totally agree. Customer care centres are really the punching bags for the engineering team behind the product.

I, Ritesh Kataria have nokia3100 phone under two years of warranty and over the past few day I am facing network problem in it therefore i got repaired it from (INDIA New Delhi Janak Puri District Centre) Nokia Care twice within a 10 days and it didnot work more then 4 hours. I spoke with Mr.Sachin and Mr. Kuldeep but they were unable to help me out of this problem and are very rude too. I tried to reach out to some senior officials over there but they are also not available over there and I am totally echausted by them.I don’t have any landline number therefore it’s effecting me a lot.

I am requesting you to please look into the matter and help me.

I purchased model:6225 in bangalore. The hands free was defective from the first day. I went to reliance web world where I purchased, helpless as they would be sent me to Nokia Care point in Malleshwaram. The so called speciallist there replaced HDS-3 with H/S-7. The sockets does not matach with the set, and my struggle continues. The care point in Malleshwaram 5 th cross street is not listed in the care points list in the web nor does the phone no. mentioned in the service job sheet. no body lifts the no mentioned in the Sheet. I will be happy if some customer care person will take care. The no mentioned in the job sheet is 57602727. My no is 9342247800.

I once had my wife’s 6610 brought in a local (Philippine) Nokia Care centre for repair–it had no signal–and we were given the same warning. But they said they wouldn’t delete the data unless it was absolutely necessary.

At any rate, for phones w/ infrared, it’s best to sync using IR, since datacables–at least the original ones–cost an arm and a leg. USB IrDA adaptors are available for about US$15. Some Nokia models (i.e. the higher-end ones and the newer ones) allow sending images across devices without the need to install the PC Suite software.

My wife’s phone eventually had to be replaced (the whole thing) and we weren’t able to make a backup. Oh well, that’s life.

I have a 6610i, unfortunately inspite of shelling out 10K indian Rs.+ 1.5K for the chord. i am unable to download the photos to PC.

I visited the nokia care centre at Brigade road, bangalore. Even there the PC suite software was corrupt and they did not have the chord to demonstrate how to do the job.

They have now directed me to some of their main care centre where i m still not sure they will help me out in getting the pictures downloaded to the computer………… Heck

I purchased a Nokia 3230 handset about two months ago and my life has changed thereafter. From the very first day, the device used to “hang” every now and then. Additionally, the battery also lost charge within 6-8 hours. The keypads were extremely hard.
After four visits to the Nokia Care Centre on Shakespeare Sarani, the handset (not the battery) was replaced with a new one about a month ago.
Alas, the problems remain. I had to send the second handset to the Nokia Care Centre once again. The handset still “hangs” and the battery still discharges quickly.
I have seen at least 30 people with complaints about this particular handset – 3230 – during my visits to the Nokia Care centre. Obviously, there is something seriously wrong inside, in this model. I am at a loss to understand why we Indians are being taken for a ride both by Nokia and their Care Centre Managers – HCL Infinet Ltd. What is one to do if an expensive device such as this has to be sent five times within two months for repairs, and each time the problems persist? I want someone to let me know if the only recourse left is a Consumer Court.

    Hi,
I had purchased a nokia 1100 under a one year warranty period .It was working fine but the last 2 months i have been in great trouble .Always theres a network problem in my handset. Its been a serious issue, since its been to the nokia care(Infantry road,Bangalore) for the fourth time in a period of 2 weeks.Neither are the people trying to help me out . They dont let me speak to concerned engineer who has repaired my handset. Each time they say it`ll work and on my way back to office i face the same problem then and there itself i go speak to the people they say, take it for a day and get back tomorrow if i face the same problem.
I had spoken to the manager out there he said that he`ll replace the entire handset, but i doubt they do that.
Its been like a hell for the past 2 to 3 weeks, me taking permission from my team leader every time. They say me to collect the hanset on some day n when we go out there, they say its not been repaired.
And what happened to the phone lines out there.I have been trying yesterday for past 2 hours no one attends the phone ,or its very busy all the time.
The quality of service provided at this very particular centre is really bad.
I am just waiting for my handset to be replaced. If thats not gonna happen, then i think i hav to take this issue to the consumer court.
So i request you to take this matter seriously. MY job sheet no is :12265 & imei no:33399(last 5 digits only). Please reply ASAP to satishkanth@yahoo.co.in or call me on +91-9886796079

    Hi,
I just spoke to the one of the customer care ,She told that i hav got to wait for one more week. I`t been like i am out without a mobile for past one one month.
Please suggest me a solution, i dont mind if i have to spent extra and buy a new handset instead ,I have lost all my patience.
I need a handset as i would be having a telephonic interview very shortly and it would go for hours.
Do reply and tell me the concerned person to discuss this at the nokia care.
    ASAP

    Sir/Madam

Kindly note that I have experienced problems with your Nokia 6680 headset which I had purchased on the 16/08/05. After two days of purchase, I handed in the set to your Nokia Centre (Westville, Durban, South Africa) for a software upgrade. I recieved the headset on 23/08/05 only to find that the headset is experiencing the same problem. After numerous calls telephonically and visiting your centre I am totally unsatisfied with your customer care.

I hereby request a new headset (in 100% working order) or else I cancel my contract with you, never purchase a nokia product again (of which I will inform to friends about and contact our local consumer council to make the public aware of)

    Awaiting your response anxiously.

Nagar, Delhi vide bill number 1950 dated 11 August 2005.

Unfortunately, I am facing certain problems in the phone. Let me list those down serially for your convenience:

    i) The warning tones of the phone namely the call-waiting tone / message received tone (while the phone is being used) are absolutely inaudible. Similarly, the low-battery warning tone is also out of earshot. This problem of extremely low volume of call-waiting tone does not allow me to attend the call-waitings leading to missing important business calls.

ii) Can I transfer the data (like a video clipping / or a ring tone) received via blue-tooth from the message Inbox to any other folder in the memory card? I could find no option to do that in the user-manual as well. This leads to comsummation of memory of the phone book where as the memory card remaining free.
I got the instrument checked from Nokia Care Service Centre, HCL Infinet Limited, 30/28, East Patel Nagar, New Delhi on 16 October 2005. However, the engineers were not competent enough to identify and rectify the problem. Further, to give you a perspective, some of my colleagues are also using the said model 3230 and facing the same trouble. This apparently shows that the defect is inherent in the manufacturing process itself and therefore needs a permanent resolution from the Company’s side.
Having presented the facts, may I please request to you look into the matter and suggest me suitable remedy for the same. The phone is still under the original warranty bearing IMEI number 3556 9400 8535 990. Enclosed is the copy of the invoice also as a proof of purchase and warranty. You may contact me on the below-mentioned address.

Hoping to get a prompt response at the earliest.

I purshased a Nokia 1600, the biggest mistake of my life.It hangs anytime and you are not able to press any key, not even switch off. The ony way is to open the cover, take out the battery and plug in again and switch on. Secondly it restarts any time, literally anytime, may be while you are talking to somebody, or its kept idle. I gave it to Nokia customer care 4 times but the problem still persists. Now those girls ask me “What can we do more we have already replaced the set”. The Nokia Care in Bangalore (30303838) asks me to submit the set again, only then they can do anything. The worst part is that a customer’s maximum reach is call centre bastard guys who will never solve your problem and will never let you talk to somebody else. This outsourcing funda has decreased the company’s problems and inturn increased the customer’s apathy. They will talk politely and keep on singing the same song indefinitely witout any concern to your grievances. I suggest everybody not to go for a Nokia mobile anymore.

    Hi,

I have a Nokia 6610i set which had some display problems. As it is currently having Warranty period i had referred to the Nokia Care centre in District Centre Janakpuri. They had written on the slip i received from them that i will receive it by monday 4pm.Most of the times the lines are busy & i was unable to enquire the status of the same.Today when i finally got through the lady on the opposite side tell me that it would take another 2-3 days as they do not have the chip to be inserted in the Display.

I cannot afford to stay without my mobile as i get a lot of calls from Clients. Thus request you to kindly take up the case urgently.

    Thanks & Regards

The Nokia India careline number in bangalore– is 3030 3838

  62. Srivasan

Guys if there is any queries in terms of Nokia then u can call Nokia on 30303838 or visit the website and believe me they are really patient and they have already replaced my handset and it is working fine but I fail to understand as to what Vivek Saxena thinks of himself. I think that he has forgotten that his handset was replaced according to his own comment.
Believe me guys Nokia customer care reps on 30303838 are very helpful.

  63. Rohit Dhesi

My unresolved N70 problems forced me to write this to Nokia!!
    Dear Mr. Wolfenden,

I find it very strange that Nokia customer care can spend money talking to me (from Bangalore) practically everyday but cannot do a simple thing like picking up the handset from me, getting it repaired and sending it back to me.

Two months, many calls, faxes and E Mails from me, submission of the handset to your service center in Gurgaon (it was kept for 1 week) and still no result!!

Again I get a call from Bangalore today asking me for a “favour” to submit my hand set to the service center again (and stand in the queue for 1 hours just to deposit the hand set)!!!

What is happening in Nokia India??

Is this how your customers treated??

    Best Regards

    Dear Sir,

Sub: Problem in my Nokia N70

I had purchased a N70 handset from Nokia dealer in Palam Vihar, Gurgaon, INDIA about 2 months ago. From the very first day the “play voice tag” option does not appear in the menu as a result of which I cannot dial any contacts through voice dialing.

Within the next few days the “memory card” stopped functioning, which was replaced by the dealer, after some persuasion.

For the first few weeks the dealer kept on telling me some story or the other and was not able to find a solution (in fact he did not even know the N70 has this feature)

Finally I was given a number and told to contact Mr. so-and so. Then I was given the run around from one phone number to another. Many of the persons I talked to did not even know that the N70 has automatic synthesized voice tags. And then I am told to go to Nokia Care in Gurgaon.

Is it not the responsibility of Nokia to provide service at the dealer from where I purchased the hand set when there has been a problem from day one?

In any case since it was “my problem” and not Nokia’s I had no choice but to go to your Gurgaon Service center. I did so on 6th May 2006 and what happens? The fellows managing the center do not even know what I was talking about. All they could offer me was the suggestion I go to a Nokia L2 (or L3) service center, as they, in Gurgaon did not know head or tail of this.

Once again I talked to the dealer who tells me that he talked to Nokia and they have told him that the N70 does not have this feature. When I quizzed him on this, he said I should leave the hand set with him and he will get it rectified.

What would you do if you faced a similar problem?

    Go to the consumer court?

I do not need this handset or a new N70!

I would rather settle for something cheaper, which works!

PS: Finally I was requested by Nokia customer care to deposit my N70 handset with the Gurgaon service center (Sheetla WWL). I did so on 16-May-06. After much follow up, I got back the handset on 23-May-06, presumably after repair.

When I checked it, the same problem existed – obviously it was not repaired.

I have written to practically everyone whose address I could get, in India but the problem has not been resolved.

Please suggest what I should do?

  70. Gaurab Banerji

Mobile phones make you smile as long as it doesnt make you visit the Service Center. 😀

I Have a Nokia 2280 (i bought from reliance) which is presently lying useless because i have dropped the connection a year back and purchased a Tata Indicom ZTE model. Within 5 months the battery started giving problems and stopped retaining charge. I could talk for only 2 to 3 minutes before it went off. I went to the service center twice (within 6 months which is the battery warranty period) and they returned it saying OK. But they didnt change the battery ( which was swelled up and visible). The 3rd time i went they are charging for the battery and wont listen to anything since the 6 months are over. They wanted me to purchase a new battery for Rs.423/- which I declined ( who knows how long the new battery will last.

Since I already have a Nokia 2280 CDMA which reset to factory settings using code *#7370#(PLEASE DONT USE THIS. It will remove service provider settings of cdma phones).
The Phone contains flash version RH-17NA and i need to upgrade to RH-17R so that i can use the TATA SIM on the RUIM of 2280. Is it Okay if i take the set to any service center? will they do it? of course i will pay them. I called up Reliance and they told me that the set has been purchased by you. We are service providers. So dont ask us. Does that mean I can service it from the Nokia Service Center without any fuss? Please tell me. I Urgently need to know.

    dear sir,
i had applied for replacement of 512 mb card for my nokia 6270 cell phone on 22.5.06. i had been visiting regularly at your patel nagar brach office [last on 27.6.06] for collecting my new 512 mb card but it is not given to me. May i know why such complicated and costlier cell phones are made if there parts in warranty period cant be made available. this is a complete harassement to me. the manager of patel nagar branch mr. dinesh is also ignoring and is not fit for the job.
i request you arrange the same for me immediately or i will rush to CONSUMER COURT for the damages and harassement caused to ne. my cell no. is 9818622547.

I lost my mobile Nokia 6600 which is just 6 months old in Palayamkottai. I am having IMEI number. Is it possible to trace the mobile? How to block the mobile from other’s use?

  75. cathy

** OK, that’s not necessarily a real conversation, but I find it too weird that Nokia can’t back up the memory on its own cellphones. **

You are taking a *broken* cellphone in to be repaired, right?

By then it is usually too late to backup anything at all…. ‘cus it is already *broken*.

Which is why you are taking it in to be fixed, right?

Sometimes the only way to get a phone working again is to reflash the corrupted memory. This replaces whatever data is on the phone that was unreadable, with something that is readable.

If the phone is not repairable at all, then they swap out the phone with another unit, and there is no magic way that your data can be transferred off the broken phone. If the phone was usable enough to do that, they would not be swapping it for another unit right?

The company that sells you a phone, orgainiser, PC, laptop, whatever is *not* responsible for doing the backups that you the user should be doing. Lazy stupid users, yet again.

You trust everything to just one copy of your data — that could be gone when someone nicks your phone, or you get it wet.

Make copies of stuff you want to keep. Don’t blame other people when it is already too late: after you broke it.

  76. Jeremy Wagstaff

Great. The first real comment on a way too popular post about Nokia’s “Care Centers” and it’s from someone who clearly doesn’t like “lazy stupid users”. Her point: Users should back up their stuff, and it’s not up to Nokia to back up memory before fixing a phone.

Hmmm. Well, certainly if it’s a computer, I’d tend to agree, but phones are different. Most people with phones have no way of backing up their data, short of writing it out longhand. Most folk, even if they have a computer, are not going to do much synchronising with their Outlook etc — especially since Nokia’s software in this regard has been pretty awful.

Her other point is the phone memory will probably be unusuable which is why people are bringing their phones into be mended. No, I’d say; most cases are going to be problems with keyboards, loose connections etc. (Just read the uninvited comments above cathy’s for a pretty useful cross section.)

I’d argue nearly all these cases could involve backing up of the memory prior to fixing (and I hear in some Nokia Centers this happens).

It’s frankly scary that people don’t realise their data is not secure. It’s also scary that devices like cellphones don’t have easier back up methods. But what’s even scarier is the idea that there are people out there who think all users are stupid and lazy.

  77. Chander

    Hi,

I have a 3230. It was having some issues and was not starting for the past 1 week. I visited the Customer Care centre at Panjagutta – Hyderabad – India. I was given a token number 68. The running token number was 19. I was shocked with the speed at which the crowd is moving. Atlast number 65 came after some 90 minutes. I went out for a tea as it would take atleast another 5 minutes for 68 to come. But to my horror, the gates of the service centre was closed all of a sudden with all other customers inside. I knoked on the locked door for around 15 minutes. The service personnel sitting inseide saw me but did nothing about it. Atlast I found the secret passage (back door) to the centre through which customers are being sent out after the (so called) service is done. I was made to wait for another 1 hour inside the closed centre before my phone was accepted for service.

The Customer care at this centre is PATHETIC.

I spent 16,000 Rs for buying this mobile but I am not satisfied with Nokia. Now iam a looser. I lost 16,000 Rs by purchasing this mobile, the customer care division in SMART CARE,THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (KERALA)-SOUTH INDIA.is worst they are not ready to even listen to me. They had cheated me by saying today tomorrow. So now I am complaining you to take necessary action against this and rectify my problem at the earliest I expect a response from u very soon.
